I hope you have arrived home safely and have nothing to do but rest on your laurels. You have done such a wonderful job breeding and handling Newton. He is so responsive and loving and quick and bright. He has already settled in and we are completely in love. Today at 12:45 was the winter solstice and the return of the sun; Happy Festival of Lights and thank you so much!
In an email Donna wrote: Hi,Luna's settling in. She's very, very happy right now -- she's sitting on Paul's lap, just got combed and is snoozing. She's getting the potty training down. (Or maybe we're getting trained.) She's got her "spot" in the back yard and goes out pretty well when we open the door and tell her to go potty. Sometimes we go out with her, sometimes we don't; she understand her job either way. She's pretty settled with grooming. I've been doing most of it. I try to comb her when she's calm. It's a lot harder to get her calmed down and OK with accepting grooming when she's revved up.OUr son's girlfriend has had standard poodles throughout her 25 years. She went toy shopping with me and made some pretty good suggestions, based on what her dogs have enjoyed. So Luna has a selection now. Her favorite today was the flavored puppy nylabone. She also particularly likes a thing with about 25 soft knotted cords on it; she shakes it with great glee. We've been largely stuck inside because there's snow and ice over most of the backyard. (I shoveled out Luna's potty area so she wouldn't be skating on the ice.) We'd hoped to be outside in the yard throwing and chasing balls, but that's waiting until the weather cooperates. At least the snow is melting because our daytime temps are above freezing. ad our first puppy class last Saturday. Luna's doing great on the homework to learn a lured 'sit' and 'down'. She's not reliable on coming when she's called. I think that's going to be a process.....Our vet says she looks great and commented on how "sweet" she is. She behaved very well at the vet's (much more cooperative than our last dog!). Doggie treats were helpful. He checked her abdominal wall and thinks the abdominal wall is intact (no hernia); he thinks the bleb is either an umbilical remnant or a blob of fat -- either way he'll address it during the spay, no big deal. Paul took Luna when he visited my Mom at her Assisted Living. The folks there LOVED Luna -- it was and hour and a half until the petting was all done. I'd hoped to have Luna have her Canine Good Citizen (and thought we would need to have that first) before taking her over there. She did great as it was. We'll send pictures when I'm coordinated enough to do it or when I can get Paul to do it! Donna
In an email Cindy wrote: Hello, Lois. I did modify her name a little to Lexie. She is 11 lbs. now and due for her first hair appointment Saturday so that she will be ready to meet relatives and friends in Iowa over Christmas. We are still working on her potty training, but she seems to catch on to other training pretty well. She sits and shakes for a treat (I wondered if she started getting that command before since she caught on so fast) and she almost has the bell ringing for “outside”, but doesn’t initiate it yet. We are coming along on leash walking and look forward to nicer weather to do more of that. I hope her other brothers and sisters are doing well also. You and your family have a great holiday also. Thanks, Cindy

Hi Lois,Happy Holidays! We took Siena to the vet this morning for another round of vaccinations, and she is up to 10 lbs, 4 oz. She is growing so quickly. The staff at the vet office couldn't get over how much she grew from the last time they saw her, which was two weeks ago. She is doing so well. She is very playful and active at times, and other times she just wants to crawl up into my lap and cuddle. She is such a joy to have around. She continues to do very well with house training. At this point, it is a very rare occasion if an accident occurs., and more than likely it would be considered an "operator error" rather than Siena not letting us know when she needs out. We have many toys to keep her busy, and she gets excited when she spends time with our other dog, Ramius. Hope all is well with you and your family. Kindest regards, Carman

In a email Judith wrote: Lois--Thank you for the pictures. My granddaughter, Maya, and I have made an album and she will love these new ones. Newton is such a joy to work with. He is so smart and responsive and willing. He respected his boundaries immediately, practically house trained himself, has learned to respond to hand signals for sit/stay/wait/release within two or three tries, walks with all of us calmly on the leash and sits when we stop. His extraordinary good manners are clearly indicative of your loving, responsible handling of your pack and we are truly grateful. I have had good dogs before, but he is very special! (And his tail is perfect!) We signed up for Life's Abundance food delivery (which is highly satisfactory) and gave your name as our reference. Thank you for that too. I give him carrots and bits of other vegetables and marrow bones. Is there anything else I should be giving him? I forgot to ask about any genetic hip disorders or other weaknesses associated with the breed. Can I give him fish oil, or something else? Newton is our first poodle (he won't be our last) and I don't know these things. Now we walk him about 1 1/2 miles morning and night, but soon he will need more exercise. I am no dog whisperer (Thank you for the recommendation for that book on your website.) I cannot imagine rollerblading in downtown L.A. or running through the mountains on a four mile jaunt. Do you have any practical ideas for how to augment his exercise? I would truly appreciate any suggestions you have. You said to me that you believed that dog/owner matches happen as they should for the best. I am sure that Isaac will match up with the best family for him. I knew that Newton would be wonderful when I first spoke with you, but I had only a glimmer of an idea of what joy and serenity and comfort he would bring to our family. Thank you! Judith
In an email Becky wrote: Lois, I LOVE all the pictures. Thank you so much for taking/sending them. Jake is being so very, very good. Last night he rang the bell to go outside. It was so cute. Yesterday I took him to Wooster to see all the people where I used to work. He was so friendly and went up and down so many stairs just like it was nothing. He is so smart. I have enjoyed being off this week with him. I have to go back to work on Monday. 8:30-4:30 I have been getting up at 6 with him and will continue to do so as it will give us time to play, eat, potty, ect before I have to leave. I think he will do fine because when I am not working we will be together. My cat is even warming up to him. So, I am sure I will tell you a million times, but thanks again for a great puppy! RQ
